Gardening Can Be So Boring ;)

Our evening went like this: Get home, kiddo says "I think we need to water plants". Um okay, you're right. This whole watering thing is fairly new to us this year as we've had rain storms every week since like January (that's NOT normal btw). So, we ventured off into the garden, hose in hand. It only took two minutes before she was hopping into the shower of water, trying to get all wet. I think I said "No Alex, I don't want you to get all wet", or maybe it was "No Alex, stop getting me wet", but then it actually started feeling good. So, we popped off the nozzle head and attached a sprinkler head, and we literally "ran with it".
Sure, there are folks saying "OMG- you're overhead watering your vegetable garden! You're spreading disease! ". Why yes, yes I am. At this point I'm thinking I already got screwed by Mother Nature- so why should she get all the fun? And so we ran.

People are driving by at this point on their way home from work- and they have this look on their face like "Dang, I wish I knew them" or "Dang, I need a kid so I have an excuse to do that too".
And she says to me, "Can I help you water the vegetables tomorrow too?" and I want to tell her "Yes! I did this all for you! This garden is yours!" but instead I say "We'll see, it depends on whether you have a good day at school or not." *sigh* It's tough being the parent sometimes.

But the garden is now drenched. I had one heck of a time watering it with her than I would have with out. And it was nice to stop being an adult, for at least 30 minutes.

Not Pictured: Me. Because a 3 year old with a camera PLUS water doesn't mix.

  1. Love it! Running through the sprinklers used to be one of my all time favorite things to do in the heat and I haven't done it in years. I may be due. :-)

  2. Your yard gets awesome-er every time I see it. And it looks like you had a great time! I'll have to get Jackjack out watering at my house too.

  4. Since that "precious girl" is a reproduction of you -- I can just guess that you got just as wet. BTW -- my unreliable Fresno weather connection says triple digits by next week. I so don't believe a word he says.

  5. We STILL run through the sprinklers (even though my daughter is 14 and taller than I am!)....good for you that you're such a great mom who remembers to never forget that 'little kid' that lurks in all of us! Next time we drive up to Tahoe maybe we'll stop to help you guys 'water'.....

  7. Yay! We do that, too, and the kids (who am I kidding -- and me, too) just love it. I laughed at the "OMG -- you're spreading disease!" part, because I'm always imagining disapproving garden lady glares when I use the sprinkler in my own garden :-)

  8. Love it! My garden helper really like watering time. When it's nice (it soooo hasn't been lately) we go out back in the afternoon and water the veg garden. The garden usually gets an equal amount of water as the kids. I mean common! They are growing too!

  9. Aaahhhhhhh: there are few things better in life than a hot sunshiny day and a sprinkler. Thank you for this: here in the Northwest I have plants rotting in the ground because of our cold, rainy wet spring/summer. The thought of watering with a sprinkler is but a dream. :)

  10. Now you guys know why we have curved pathways in our vegetable garden- because it's hard to take sharp turns when you're running on a wet surface! The watering-by-hand thing is only temporary- the driplines are finally going in this weekend! In many ways I should be thankful for our mild Spring this year since I didn't have the irrigation done yet!

  11. as a kid growing up in the valley, i remember there is nothing more fun on a hot afternoon than running thru the sprinklers! looks like alex will grow up with some excellent memories of "watering the veggie garden," too. of course, it's all fun and games until someone brings the hose into the house. ;)

  15. Oh Carri, what a sweet story! Sometimes in the summer I'll bring one or both of my boys with me to help out on a jobsite. They're now 17 and 19, but in between potting up petunias they sometimes discreetly turn the hose on their brother or me. With so much of my day being paid to "work" in a garden, it's a sweet reminder to stop and have fun in it, too!

  16. Sniff, sniff...

Such a great story! I look forward to hearing about all the cool things you guys do in the garden in the coming years. And to see if my entomology prediction comes true. But who knows, now she may become an irrigation specialist. ;—)
